The Textile Art Council presents The Eight Annual Carol Walter Sinton Program for Craft Art Laotian Textiles From Village to Gallery: The Story of Ock Pop Tok at 10 a.m. on Saturday June 25 at Koret Auditorium, de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Ock Pop Tok (Lao for “East Meets West”) is an innovative textile gallery and workshop located in Luang Prabang, Laos. It was founded by Smith ten years ago with the goals of empowering women artisans through the use of their traditional skills, to bring people together to celebrate their cultural heritage, to exchange knowledge and ideas and to foster a sense of pride in themselves and each other. The foundation encourages and promotes handcrafts produced by ethnic minority groups in rural Laos, preserving village traditions and enriching the lives of 150 artisan weavers.
You will also be able to meet Smith at a trunk sale from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Krimsa Gallery, 2190 Union St. in San Francisco. A portion of proceeds benefit TAC.
