US Supreme Court Rules on Marriage Equality

Screen Shot 2015-06-26 at 4.07.22 PMWhat a historic day! On Friday, June 26, the US Supreme Court ruled by a 5-to-4 vote that the Constitution guarantees a right to same sex marriage. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority, saying “No longer may this liberty be denied. No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”

President Obama said he believes the ruling  “affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts. Today we can say, in no uncertain terms, that we have made our union a little more perfect.”

With San Francisco Pride Week in full swing, the landmark decision is making waves in San Francisco, and at Academy of Art University too. School of Fashion Executive Director Simon Ungless said, “Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court is momentous. Academy of Art University is lucky enough to be rooted in San Francisco, a city that has a long history of supporting LGBT causes and equal rights. With a student body that is nearly as diverse as the city itself, we are celebrating this move toward equality. Going into SF Pride with this ruling, now more than ever we feel incredibly honored to be involved with Juanita MORE!’s fundraising efforts for Y.E.S.”

Juanita MORE!, who recently chose Academy of Art University as a partner for LGBT fundraising efforts, said of the ruling, “I’m absolutely brimming with pride that the Supreme Court got it right on this momentous occasion. That I can relish this victory with my community in my hometown of San Francisco, one of the birthplaces of the modern gay rights movement, during Pride weekend makes it that much sweeter. While it is true that there is still much more to fight for and defend in the way of equal rights for all people, this is a monumental step in the right direction.”

Celebrate history being made, and enjoy SF Pride!
