Karina Rasmussen Wins SURTEX Design Competition

We are thrilled to announce that Academy of Art University BFA Textile Design student, Karina Rasmussen, has been selected as one of the SURTEX International Student Design Competition winners! SURTEX hosts their prestigious annual competition, named designext, to honor outstanding art & design students for their innovative and exceptional surface design work. This year’s theme of “Street Inspiration” is one that is both interesting and relevant to our current culture. The students were challenged to create six original surface designs inspired by what they think will be “street influences” in the year 2020. They were asked to create the six designs and present them as a collection within one of the four following product categories: Wear, Work, Live, or Play. SURTEX encouraged the students to harness their creativity and develop designs that were both inventive and viable in the marketplace.

2014 Designext International Student Design Competition Winner, Karina Rasmussen

Karina’s inspiration stems from her Danish background and her experiences within the many countries and cultures she’s been exposed to. Her interest in art and design developed after completing her International Baccalaureate in Denmark and making the decision to move to London. Once in London, Karina attended a foundation course in art, design and architecture at Kingston University. Having formed a fascination for innovation and fabric manipulation, she decided to apply for Academy of Art University. “My goal is to continue to grow within the exciting industry where I can contribute as much value as I can,” she says. Karina applies her dynamic designs and exploration of innovative techniques to both fashion and interiors. She is currently finishing her BFA in Textile Design and will be graduating this Spring 2014.

Karina will travel to New York City, along with three other winners, to attend the SURTEX conference in May. There, she will present her collection to industry professionals and the final judging will take place.

The Grand Prize winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship, a special mention on the SURTEX website for one year, receive mention in a special designext press release (going to several hundred trade and consumer press), and be featured within On the Surface e-newsletter.

Congratulations to Karina Rasmussen and good luck in New York City!
