We get a lot of fashion competition postings on our Facebook wall — but when we saw an open call for entries for the American Batik Competition, we thought it might be worth posting on Fashion School Daily.

What exactly is batik? Well, according to the Oxford dictionary it is:

1.) a method (originally used in Java) of producing colored designs on textiles by dyeing them, having first applied wax to the parts to be left undyed.

2.) cloth that has been dyed using the batik method.

That said, the competition is having an open call for entires — that’s where you come in. The American Batik Design Competition is an open competition that gives talented designers to use American values while honoring Indonesian batik motifs.

The theme of the competition is “The Spirit of America in the Heritage of Batik” and those who decide to enter the competition must fulfill the following requirements:

1.) They have to be designed by American designers.

2.) They exhibit the American spirit and values, drawing from its history and folklore.

Judges will consist of Batik and textile experts as well as fashion designers and representatives of fashion industries from Indonesia and the U.S. Participants of this competition will be asked to create an “American batik” digital design only. The transformation from digital designs into batik tulis (handmade batik) will be later done by Indonesian batik artists.

Closing date for submissions is August 1. If you are interested in the competition, please visit americanbatik.embassyofindonesia.org for complete details.
