Extravagant Shelter
B.F.A. Fashion Design student Ciana Gong drew inspiration for her thesis collection from movies, particularly “A Clockwork Orange,” a current favorite. The film’s avant-garde, artistry, and its space-age-style furniture sparked the ideas for Gong’s collection.
In Gong’s designs, curvy, organic shapes from furniture translate into dresses, coats, pants, and shirts. Sturdy fabrics like felt, neoprene, vinyl, and pleather help define these unique silhouettes.
Understanding one’s target audience is crucial in fashion design, as it shapes the concept behind new garments. For Gong, the ultimate goal of her collection is to provide a measure of protection from the movie’s violent undertones.
The collection aims to envelop the wearer in a cocoon-like silhouette and bold colors, offering comfort and security. These garments serve as a form of shelter for those affected by violence, whether physical or verbal. Gong’s focus on defense against potential attacks is evident in her choice of bold, blood-like colors. Asymmetrical designs act as a shield against possible threats, empowering the wearer with a sense of strength and resilience.
