MBFW Backstage Interviews with Lejla Brackovic

Academy of Art University Multimedia Communication B.F.A student Lejla Brackovic made the trek from San Francisco to New York to cover Academy of Art University’s Fall 2014 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Armed with a full camera crew and plenty of questions, Lejla got some great backstage interviews with the talented designers and even some commentary from our VIP guests!

We caught up with Lejla after the show to ask her a few questions of our own.

Fashion School Daily: Was this your first time at MBFW? How did you like it?

Lejla Brackovic: No, it was actually my second time at MBFW. I did attend in February of 2013 as well. I loved it and found it even more fun the last time.

FSD: What is your favorite memory from MBFW?

LB: Just seeing the collections designed by the students was amazing. The creations were absolutely beautiful and it was very exciting to meet with the designers and follow them only minutes before the show. It was a great experience.

FSD: What was it like to do backstage interviews for MBFW?

LB: Everything went smooth and as planned. We didn’t bring too much equipment so we wouldn’t take too much space. I know that the backstage environment of a fashion show gets very hectic and stressful. To my surprise the designers had more time to chat than I thought they would.

FSD: Were there any challenges to flying yourself and a crew to NY to do the interviews?

LB: The biggest challenge was probably covering all the costs for it ourselves and being responsible for planning and executing it. We were basically left to ourselves and had to be extremely prepared to make sure everything went smoothly. It was also my first time brining my own crew outside the city I am stationed in. I have been in NYC a couple of times before, but that doesn’t make me an expert on the city so everything had to be carefully planned and researched. My biggest learning was that anyone can do anything as long as they put everything they have into it!

FSD: What was your process for planning this video segment? Did it turn out how you expected?

LB: I looked up all the designers in advance and tried to stay as much in touch with the Fashion Department as possible. Reviewing all of the information I could get prior to the event was helpful. A list of shots and angles created in pre-production was also key. We even got a celebrity interview which was exciting and I think amazing for the final piece!

I have to say that overall I had a great time and will never forget the experience. I have to thank the School of Multimedia Communication and the School of Fashion for making this possible and trusting me enough to assign me something like this. The feedback has been great, not only to my video but also towards the amazing collections.
