Each year we look forward to The Met Gala for two reasons: 1) It means the opening of an amazing new exhibit curated by the folks at the Met’s Costume Institute and 2) Because the red carpet is always amazing. The annual opening night shindig is basically the Oscars of the fashion world, so you know that everyone will be dressed to impress. There were a number of ladies wearing designs by the woman of the evening, Miuccia Prada, whose inventive work makes up half of the exhibition – Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. Our favorite Prada look was worn by Carey Mulligan, whose gold and silver paillette-covered dress glittered beautifully amidst the flash bulbs. We also loved Anna Wintour’s Prada gown that paid homage to the late Schiaparelli with a gold, beaded lobster.

There were embellishments of every variety imaginable – from feathers and frills to lace, embroidery, and appliqués. Emma Stone’s custom Lanvin number was decorated with 3,000 tiny flowers, Alber Elbaz told reporters on the red carpet. And Cate Blanchett’s Alexander McQueen gown, designed by Sarah Burton, was covered in feathers from head to toe, ending in a flurry of black ostrich – elegant opulence at its finest.

Jewel tones were also quite popular – as they always are on the red carpet. Emerald green in particular seemed to be the color of the evening, seen on Greta Gerwig, wearing Prabal Gurung, Dianna Agron in Carolina Herrera, and Girls star Lena Dunham, who chose Wes Gordon. We also quite liked the bright canary yellow worn by both Solange Knowles, in Rachel Roy, and January Jones in Versace.

And it wouldn’t be a gala without some Old Hollywood glamour. Camilla Belle looked like a young Elizabeth Taylor in a liquid silver gown by Ralph Lauren, complete with expertly arched eyebrows and side-swept hair. And Christina Ricci, wearing Thakoon Panichgul, was picture perfect in a form-fitting dress adorned in the back with an oversized bow that trailed beautifully behind.
