ABOUT FASHION JOURNALISM

Academy of Art University has long been one of the only U.S. schools to offer a Fashion Journalism Program, and in June 2013 received accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission for the B.A. and M.A. Fashion Journalism degrees. The program is led by Stephan Rabimov, Director of Social Media & Fashion Journalism. Rabimov is also the Editor-in-Chief of Depesha Magazine, and contributor to The Huffington Post, and Forbes International.

Faculty include Emily Holt, contributing writer to Vogue.com; Diane Dorrans Saeks, San Francisco correspondent for W Magazine and Women’s Wear Daily, and the author of numerous books on interior design, architecture, style, gardens and travel; Paul Wilner, former editor of the San Francisco Chronicle Style section and the San Francisco Examiner Magazine, and former contributor to The New York Times Arts & Leisure section, and Los Angeles Times; Cynthia Durcanin, a founding editor of Elle.com whose work has appeared in Ellemagazine, Esquire, eLuxury.com, The Wall Street Journal, and Travel & Leisure; Zandile Blay, an award-winning multi-media journalist, and a former fashion editor of Paper magazine and Editor-in-Chief of Hello! Nigeria.

Fashion Journalism Guests and Academy honorees include Robin Givhan, the only fashion writer to be the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, journalism’s highest honor, for fashion criticism, Cathy Horyn, former fashion critic for The New York Times and current critic for New York Magazine’s fashion blog, The Cut, and Suzy Menkes, the long-time fashion reporter for The New York Herald Tribune and International Edition of The New York Times, who currently serves as International Fashion Editor for 19 international editions of Vogue online.

Other notable guest speakers include Simona Melegari of Rolling Stone Magazine Italy, Gene Krell of Condé Nast Japan, 
Rosalie Huang of Condé Nast Taiwan, Martine and Prosper Assouline of Assouline Publishing, Matt Tyrnauer of Vanity Fair, Patrick Cabasset of L’Officiel Paris, Richard Klein founder of Surface and publisher of FourTwoNine, Lorraine Sanders of San Francisco Chronicle Style Bytes column and founder of Digital Style Digest, and Eugenia Chen formerly of Polyvore.

Students have gone on to work and intern for Allure, Deux Hommes, FourTwoNine, Gilt Groupe, GenArt, Fashion Times, Jed Root, Nylon, Nylon Japan, POPSUGAR, Refinery29, Stylesight, SOMA, Teen Vogue, Visionaire World, Vogue Japan, Women’s Wear Daily, WWD Men’s, Worth Global Style Network, and Yelp, among others.


ABOUT FASHION STYLING

Academy of Art University is one of the only institutions in the United States to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Styling. The program received WASC Senior College and University Commission for the B.A. Fashion Styling degrees in 2013.

The program is led by Flore Morton, Assistant Director in Fashion Styling and Fashion Editor of 180 Magazine, who has worked for Hermes under Martin Margiela and Jean-Paul Gaultier in Paris, and taught by a faculty that has worked at W Magazine, Details Magazine, Free People, Macy’s, Old Navy, Levi’s beyond others.

Students from the styling program gain a hands-on experience creating outfits upon a concept and producing photo shoots. Through projects and photo shoots throughout the program, students learn the ropes of product styling, personal styling, and styling on models, on figure and still life products.

 The Fashion Styling program invites Guests and Distinguished Speakers to lecture and recruit stylists on campus. Guests include Joe Zee, former editor-at-large of Elle Magazine, and current Editor of Yahoo Style, Claudia Mata, former Accessories Editor of W Magazine, Nicole Gordon, Lead Stylists at Stitch Fix, and Ali Ghanbarian, Editor-in-Chief of SOMA Magazine.

Styling students have gone on to work full time and freelance for Abercrombie & Fitch, Apple, Azalea, Bebe, BCBG MaxAzria, Forbes Magazine, Forever 21, HTC, Levi’s, Nasty Gal, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Sandbox Studios, Sephora, Stitch Fix, Tog + Porter, Touch of Modern, Trumaker, and Old Navy, among others. Students straight out of school are also represented by agencies such as Tokyo SF Agency, Artist’s Services, and Look Artists.

Fashion Styling students have been published in web and print magazines such as 180 Magazine, The San Francisco Chronicle, Vogue.it, HUF Magazine, 7×7, Schon! Magazine, and SOMA Magazine, among others.
