Crown Point Treasures, Fleet Week, and a Fun Place to Watch the Presidential Debates

Another week in San Francisco means another week to explore the city every Academy student calls home. With everything from art to Fleet Week, from fashion shows to presidential debates, San Francisco offers up countless activities for another great week on a student friendly budget.

Check out these events for your post-class amusement and don’t forget to share with friends!

Monday

 

Crown Point Press
Time: 10:00am – 5:00pm
Cost: Free

One of San Francisco’s hidden art treasures, Crown Point Press is still going strong since its beginning in 1962. Join art enthusiasts heading to the location at 20 Hawthorne Street and see current exhibits on display including John Zurier and Friends and Wayne Thiebaud and Four New Etchings. And since Crown Point Press doubles as a working art studio, you might even get lucky enough to catch an artist in the middle of their creative process!

Tuesday

 

On The Grid: Textiles & Minimalism
Time: 9:30am – 5:15pm
Cost: $6 for Students with current IDs.

This exhibit at the de Young presents more than 20 textiles that examine core aspects of the Minimalist art aesthetic. Whether the commonality is one of many underlying design principles such as symmetry or repetition, or the commonality is found in the approach to abstraction, these Minimalist textile prints drive the timeless point that there is beauty in simplicity.

Wednesday

Rhizome Presents: Peter Rojas & Tracy Chou in Conversation
Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Cost: Free; RSVP here.

Rhizome’s Seven on Seven will meet at Minnesota Street Project to host another discussion between visionary artists and technologists. Speakers will include Peter Rojas, co-founder of tech blogs Gizmodo and Engadget, and previous VP of Strategy at AOL, and Tracy Chou, named one of Forbes’s 30 under 30 in technology and former Pinterest and Quora engineer. The powerhouse duo will speak about how creativity (art) and innovation can not only complement but also enhance one another.

Fall Beauty Fest
Time: 1:00pm – 8:00pm
Cost: Free

Get a free one-on-one consultation with pro-makeup artists from Blue Mercury. You can learn expert tips and new fall beauty trends to kick off the season. Featuring Pro makeup artists from multiple brands like: Bobbi Brown, NARS, Clinique, Lune+Aster, Trish McEvoy, Estee Lauder and Laura Mercier. Each brand will have exclusive gifts for all of those come and will be given raffle tickets for a basket valued at $500, that will be announced on the last day of the event. Fashion Show| Cool by Definition
Time: 6:30pm– 9:00pm
Cost: Free Limited seating, register here.

A show where fashion meets performance- from the performers to the fabric itself! Love Shibue releases a breakthrough fabric by Garmatex, called Cool Kottinu, that promises to keep you cool in hot situations. Wearable from slow morning coffees to Girls Night Out, the “Cool Collection” fabric, said to be soft and classy, will debut at the show held at OPAL Night Club.

Fleet Week |Air Show

The 35th Annual Fleet Week kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 4. SFFW, the largest of its kind in the U.S., is now recognized by the United States Department of Defense as the blueprint for Fleet Weeks! Join the celebration by heading down to the Marina Green in the morning for the Marina Green Festival, then head over to Pier 39 to listen to the Navel Sea Cadet Corps Band of West while eating your lunch, and then head back to the Marina Green to stake your spot out for the Air Show featuring the Blue Angels. Join in the fun online, too, by using #WeAreFleetWeek.

2016 Presidential Debate at SoMA Street Park
Time: 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Cost: Free

SoMA Street Park opens its food truck doors (and bottles) for the second round of presidential debates. Bring your friends, chow down on delicious food from 10 food trucks like Torraku Ramen or El Calamar, and watch as Hillary Clinton  and Donald Trump  duke it out for your vote on November 8th.’
